Can I still run a program if I put my computer in stand by mode?

I have a huge file that is being saved to my computer. The saving process is going very very very slow. I want to put my computer in stand by mode because I think it will be easier on it. Can I do that and still have this one program running?
Ok. Will turning off the monitor help at all?

Unfortunately no, when you are in standby mode the entire O/S is suspended and any applications that are running. So, the save process will not continue and you will have to restart it again afterward.
